Column width autofit doesn't always work.

Sometimes a column width won't autofit when I double-click the column separator at the right of the column heading. What causes this behavior and how do I fix it?

Microsoft 365 and Office | Excel | For home | Windows

    It only happens occasionally. I haven't discerned a pattern.

    I don't get an error message.

    Unfortunately, I couldn't test the Format > Autofit Column Width functionality because I haven't  been able to recreate the issue. I checked a lot of files, but I had already manually expanded the columns. I'll try Format > Autofit Column Width the next time I encounter this problem.

    If you have "Wrap Text" set for your columns, then auto column width won't work because Excel is already wrapping the text for you.

    Un-check the "Wrap Text" option under Format Cells->Alignment, then try double-clicking your columns.

    Merged cells can impair the row or column autofit function.

    Could that be the cause of the intermittent nature of the problem?

    Does this happen with all files are specific file?

    Do you get any error message when you double click on the column separator to AutoFit?

    Verify if you can auto format by clicking on home > Format > AutoFit Column width when double click fails.
