Windows Live Mail is free. Outlook is part of Office Home and Business and up, and hence not free.

Windows Live Mail offers e-mail capabilities and a calendar. Outlook offers these, plus tasks and notes.

Windows Live Mail does not have a programming interface. Outlook can be programmed using VBA code, both from within Outlook itself and from other applications.

Windows Live Mail doesn't work with Microsoft Exchange (corporate mail server). Outlook has full support for working with Microsoft Exchange.

Microsoft Outlook is part of the Office suite; it is not free.

Outlook.com is the successor to Hotmail; it is free.

    Aside from Hans' reply.

MS regards Outlook as a Business application and does not expect the home user to be running it.  This is why WLM is free and OL isn't.

why then were we home users forced to use it - not asked to.

Also its confusing when you use Outlook on your normal home PC usage (no choice as mentioned) but when you click on a email link in say a council website you have to open Windows Live Mail.

I recall the same confusion over Hotmail and live mail, being told there was no difference, same platform however unnecessary layers of confusion among the customers.
