The function key F4 repeats the last action, both in Excel 2003 and in Excel 2010.

There is no built-in shortcut for Sort in either version - see Keyboard shortcuts in Excel 2010.

You can use Alt+H, S, S to simulate clicking the ribbon button to sort ascending (it's labeled Sort A to Z, Sort Smallest to Largest or Sort Oldest to Newest depending on the data), and Alt+H, S, O to simulate clicking the ribbon button to sort descending.

A shortcut for sort did not exists, F4 is the shortcut for redo of the last action. There is no difference in this between 2003 and 2010.

If you want a shortcut for a sort routine, record a macro and assign a shortcut to the macro.

    Andreas.

To get to the data sort dialog: ALT-D-S. Follow that with <enter> to repeat your last sort on that data.

    These also work:

    ALT-A-S-A (sort ascending)

    ALT-A-S-D (sort descending)

ALT-A-S-S (sort dialog box, and LOL).

ALT-D-S same as ALT-A-S-S with one fewer keystroke and one less profanity. :)

There is a shortcut - ALT +ASA and sort Z-A is ALT +ASD. Not exactly easy to remember though!

The best solution is to put the Sort button on your Quick Access Toolbar (right up the top left of Excel)

Easiest way to put it there is to click on the 'More' button on the right side of the Quick Access Toolbar and click Sort A-Z. You can also add buttons you find useful from the ribbons by right clicking on them and choosing Add to the Quick Access Toolbar.

If you create your own shortcuts on the Quick Access Toolbar they're always available, whichever ribbon you're on.

    Hope that helps.

ok. so every time i get to this phase in a project i have to do a large number of sorts.

and i get so frustrated that i think nasty thoughts. forgive me. the issue is this... and F4 does not seem to help btw.... i might know why... i might not...

In an effort to save us from stupid people... it seems... we must verify each time we sort something that we want EXCEL to use our selection if there are data next to the selection. every time. and it appears there is no way to disable this "feature" which is supposed to protect us from ourselves... (the aforementioned stupid people, myself included).

so if I sort a column, then select new column and hit F4, it does nothing... apparently because the last action i did was not sort... but rather click a dialog option saying that I really, really do want Excel to sort the data i selected (Again) yes... for the 150th time... i still do mean it.

so... um yeah... it would be nice to have way around this "safety feature..." and like i said... i am one of the stupid people... so if you have a way around it please share...

if you don't, then please don't bother with a reply... for instance if think f4 "should" work, but did not actually test it... yeah... just please... never mind. i am gonna go back to my 5 extra clicks for 100 more columns... and try not to go postal or get carpel tunnel because of this safety feature...

peace too all. (except the software engineers who put this stupid feature in the software)
