I have Microsoft Office Home and Business 2010 installed on my machine. I downloaded Microsoft Access RUNTIME 2010. After installation, I get prompted for a product key. I thought runtime was free. I tried my Office product key but it wont even accept the first character.

Any ideas???

Office Home and Business 2010 doesn't include Access, so it makes sense that the product key won't work.

Is this the one you downloaded? http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=10910

Thanks. That is all I want Access for. (No requirement to design or create anything)

Once download and installation are done, and I launch the Access Icon, I get a message about the  "Configuiration Progress". This runs to completion. I then get a message saying "the configuration for Microsoft Access Runtime 2010" is complete. To Make your changes take effect, exit, and restart any open Office programs".

    I do this.

Once I launch the program now, i get an "error/warning" message saying "Microsoft Access Runtime 2010 cannot verify the license for this application. A repair attempt failed or was canceled by the user. The application will now shut down."

I click OK and this disappears, but is replaced then by a large yellow/white Box (similar to the Configuration box above) that says "Need to find your Product key? ...'Your product key is 25 characters etc etc'.... with an input box to enter the product key and an inactive Continue button.

The Microsoft Office package im using is new, authentic and fully licensed etc.

The Access Runtime only allows you to run Access apps. You can't change design or create Access apps. But it should not be asking you for a product Key. What does the product Key form actually say?

Yes. Thats the one i downloaded.  The reason i downloaded it is because Office doesnt include Access. I assumed that Access runtime was a 'free addin'. I was surprised to be prompted for a product key!!!
