Word 2011 for MAC became terminally busy and the document I was working on was unavailable. When I restarted Word and attempted to open the autosave copy of my document, I got an error screen: "Word was unable to read this document. It may be corrupt. Try one or more of the following: *Open and Repair the file. *Open the file with the Text Recovery converter. Since the 1st suggestion of opening and repairing the document wouldn't work, I need to find the Text Recovery converter. Any suggestions. I need to recover this document.

Thanks,

RIC4001

    There is no AutoSave in Word. There is only AutoRecover, which you won't see at work unless "your computer stops responding or loses power" (or if Word crashes) AND you've previously saved your document.

    Try this:

    • In the main menu bar, select File > Open
    • In the center, there is a dropdown menu titled "Enable:"
    • Click on it and select Recover text from any file, all the way at the bottom

    You will have to do a lot of cleanup, though.

    My Word doesn't seem to have the "Enable" button. Just Open and standard choices.Ideas?

    This is what I see - it still seems to me to be as Daniels said:

    Click File->Open... :

    Which takes you to the open file dialog. There is an Enable button in the middle of the lower section (see the green arrow):

    when I click the dropdown next to that, I get this - choose the "recover text from any file" option:

    But perhaps that is not what you see?

    A similar error (obliteration of text) occurred in an older version of Word, except that the text was replaced by asterisks. Word's current version is 14.4.4 (check yours in Word > About Word). If it's older than that, use Help > Check for Updates until no more updates are found.

    The document is not recoverable, since all characters have been internally replaced by some variation of page-number fields. If its content was vital to you, check this thread.

    Manually, you have only one option to recover your word document which is already suggested by Microsoft word is to “open and repair the file”. If this steps is unable to fix your problem and you are still getting the same error messages as well as if you  are unable to access your word file then I suggest you to take help of third party word recovery Mac utility. It is able to recover word document which is lost due to any kinds of reasons. You can get free trial version of this utility here:- http://www.wordrecoverymac.com
