In equations, align at character doesn't work.

In Word 2011, when entering equations (new equation editor) on multiple lines, I'd like to align them on the equals sign.  Descriptions of doing this are readily available: I right-click on the equals sign and select "Align at this character".  A thin alignment bar appears in the equation.  However, each equation continues to start at the left margin.

In other words, everything seems to go fine, but the alignment doesn't occur.

Am I missing some step?

  • Equations need to be left-aligned (select them and do Command L); then you can adjust the left margin to move them around.
  • All equations need to have the = defined as an alignment point; you should see |= in all of them.
  • Use Shift Return between equations, rather than Return; this will keep them in the same paragraph and make alignment possible.

Ah!  Shift Return was my missing step.  In retrospect, it makes a lot of sense.  Just doesn't seem to be documented (e.g., <http://blog.officeformac.com/questions-about-custom-equations-in-word/> just says Return).

    Thanks!
