The end-of-cell marker in a table functions like the paragraph mark in ordinary text in that it holds the formatting for the paragraph, but it also holds formatting for the cell (so it cannot be deleted). You can have more than one paragraph in a cell, and all but the last will have the ordinary pilcrow paragraph mark.

The same symbol (defined by Unicode as the "currency sign," a universal monetary symbol) is also used for the end-of-row marker, which holds formatting for the row. I believe the last EOR marker is also the end-of-table marker, which holds formatting for the table.

The marker stores cell-specific formatting. There is also an "end-of-row" marker that stores similar information for rows.

This is one of the non-printing characters, just like the end-of-paragraph character ¶ and the manual line break character ¬. You see these characters if you turn on the Show/Hide ¶ button on the Home tab of the ribbon. Their function is to provide information about the structure of the document. In the case of the ¤ character, it indicates where the text in a table cell ends.

    sara,

Sunburst? Do you mean the little icon that appears below your active curser? That would be the click and type icon. Does it change shape if you move your cursor to the left or right margin for instance. It allows you to quickly format so that a paragraph is centered or flush right and so on. If that is the case and you no longer want it to appear, go to Office-button, Word Options - Advanced category - editing options - remove check next to enable click and type.

But maybe Hans has hit the nail on the head and you are looking at a table cell marker.

Where do you see this symbol? If you see it at the end of the text in each cell in a table, it's the end-of-cell marker.
