Whenever I create a new slide it has the line "click to add text"  no matter what I do can not delete it.

I can insert new text.

I can add diagrams but whenever I view the slide it has the text "click to add new text"

(PS I am just recently upgrading from 2003 to 2010  and I detest with a passion this new interface)

On the Home tab of the ribbon, in the Slides group, click the Layout dropdown and select a different slide layout.

By the way, the text :Click to Add Text will only be visible in Normal view, not in the slide show.

As well as what Hans said.

All of the standard layouts that allow Smart Art, Charts, Clip Art etc ALSO allow Tex and have the "Click to Add Text". You can change the text (even one space) but it cannot be blank.

If you ONLY want to add a Smart art diagram you need to create a custom layout.

In the Slide Master View

"Insert Layout"

"Insert Placeholder" onto this layout choosing "Smart Art" (or whatever type you need) Stretch to the size needed.

If you wish alter the default text and the name of the layout.

This will now be available in Normal view and will not allow text.
