In Word, an anchor symbol in the left margin shows where a floating object (picture, text box, table) is attached to the text. If you really want to remove the anchor, you do it by selecting the object and deleting it from the document. If you just don't want to see the anchor symbol (but you do want to keep the object), click File > Options > Display and uncheck the box for "object anchors".

In Word, objects can't be completely independent of text. For example, an anchored object will always appear on the same page as its anchor.

The alternative is to set the Text Wrapping to "In line with text," which will make the object behave as a (large) text character.

I have the same question but what I want to know is how to remove the anchoring of a text or picture box to a certain paragraph, not how to remove the object itself! In other words to make it independent of the text.

Sir, but I have a Box which is anchored to the page and when I insert a tick symbol inside the box, it doesn't show. I've even tried ordering the box and the text (send to back, bring to front, etc.) but it still doesn't help.

So how do I insert check-marks in the various boxes in my form, when all of them are anchored. Please Help.

    Thank You.

Another alternative, if your requirement is to "nail" the object to a specific location on a specific page regardless of changes to the text around it, is to use Microsoft Publisher or a similar page-oriented program.

Word doesn't maintain any fixed page objects. Pages are created and reflowed on the fly as you edit and reformat the text and graphics. There literally isn't any "page" thing to nail an object to.
