How do i return to the main text after going to a hyperlink

If the hyperlink is to a place in the same document, go back by pressing Alt+left arrow, or use the Back button on the Web toolbar.

If the link opens another document or a web browser, you have to minimize or close that window and click back into the original document.

What do you mean?

If you click on a hyperlink in Word, that links to a place in the document, use the Back button on Word's Web toolbar to return to that hyperlink.

Have you found the Web toolbar in Word?  Can you see the back button?

sorry, it is Word 2003, no Back button, no web browser

As Rich said, if the Web toolbar isn't visible, right-click any toolbar (or click View > Toolbars) and click "Web" in the menu to make it visible. The Back button is the left-pointing arrow in a circle at the left end of the Web toolbar. If there's any place to go back to, that button changes from gray to green. (And yes, I am talking about Word 2003.)

Assuming your hyperlink took you to another part of the document... use the back button on the Web tools [*] toolbar. (*sorry, don't have Word 2003 any more, not 100% sure what it is called).

If you can't see it, right-click on the toolbars and select it from the list.

If you hyperlink took you to another file or application or website, then use the Windows task bar to bring back your original document.
