Difference between stand alone and suite

Why does it cost £10 more to buy one standalone product (Excel, Word, Powerpoint) than to buy the suite that has four products? Am I missing something obvious?

It is much less expensive to purchase an Office suite as opposed to four individual products, but I do not believe you can purchase the equivalent Office suite for less than the price of a single Office aplication. The prices you are comparing are likely for a non-commercial use suite vs. a full commercial use stand-alone application. I believe all stand-alones are full use licenses.

Actually you can by an Office bundle for less than a standalone copy, if you don't make an exact match on the license terms.

Office Home and Student PKC typically retails for USD 120, while most of the individual Office app cost $140 for the retail (FPP) license.

Yes you can can buy Word, and all of the other "Office" apps standalone. Most of them retail for USD140 (with some exceptions, like Visio). But if you are going to pay that much for one app, you might was well spend $20 more and get 4 apps in the Home and Student bundle, "just in case of a rainy day".

You CAN leave the unwanted apps "on the shelf", or at least on the disk. You can install all of the apps, or just the one(s) in the bundle you want.

Install or remove individual Office programs and components

    <edit> to fix the prices

This is what is WRONG with Microsoft!!! I have to go download another "suite" for FREE because I cannot buy one stand alone product (word) for less. I do not want and will not USE any of the other products so why do they need to be installed on my computer? You would think Microsoft would choose to make SOME money over NO money.

It is called marketing. They REALLY want you to buy Office, but if you don't, they are more than happy to take more money for less product.

Jeeped's point about commercial use of Home and Student is valid too, H&S is the only suite close to standalone price.
