Note that dragging the table by its handle (even just nudging it a short distance) makes it wrapped; that is, it accomplishes the same thing as changing the "Text wrapping" (on the Table tab of Table Properties) from None to Around. This is important to know because many problems with tables arise from their being wrapped when you think they are inline.

    Other important things to know:

    1. If the table is at the very top of the document, with no text paragraph preceding it, you can generate a text paragraph above it by pressing Enter at the very beginning of the first table cell. To make sure you are at the very beginning of the document (since Enter anywhere else will just insert a paragraph break inside the table), press Ctrl+Home.
    2. You can get out of the table by pressing the right arrow at the end of the last cell, but this should not be necessary, as there is always a text paragraph (even if empty) below the table, and you can click in it. If you have nonprinting characters (or at least paragraph marks) displayed, this is easier to see.
    3. You must make the table wrapped if you want to wrap text around it (above, below, and to the side), but if you just want to type text beside a table, the easiest way is to insert another column, remove any borders, merge cells if there are more than one, and use the added cell to type text that will appear to be outside the table.

Make sure Show/Hide is on. Select the Table by clicking on the 4-headed arrow at top left of table. With Table selected maneuver it to any new location. To type above the table move table down and then click in area above table. To type on side or below table, move table and then click and type.

For your second problem, you need to start a new thread. For the first, did you read my reply above? You should be able to generate an empty paragraph above the table, and there is always an empty paragraph below a table (unless it is wrapped, in which case the paragraph to which it is anchored may be behind it). In the Table Properties, on the Table tab, make sure text wrapping is set to None.

If none of this helps, you can post your problem document at SkyDrive or another file upload site, making it public so that we can take a look at it.

Make sure Show/Hide is on. Select the Table by clicking on the 4-headed arrow at top left of table. With Table selected maneuver it to any new location. To type above the table move table down and then click in area above table. To type on side or below table, move table and then click and type.

The above is clear and easy to follow. Yet it did not solve my problem. This particular document in which I inserted a table, will not allow me to type either above or below the table. In the end I inserted a header and footer to "solve" my problem. However, I need to know what I did wrong.

Secondly, I often get a DW20.exe error. How do I solve this? Downloaded programs want me to buy their products - not what I want to do. Could you advise me how to solve such a problem? Regards, Inge P Shahia (RSA)

A very quick, helpful response. I should have asked before, and not spent considerable time trying many combinations of " keys stokes etc "and not getting anywhere. Thanks very much marysully.
