I tried downloading the free trial of microsoft 2010 to my macbook pro and it brought up the downloads folder. i double clicked on it and it took me to textedit saying that the program cannot download because it is in DOS mode. someone pleaseeee help

That's because Office 2010 is for Microsoft Windows, not Macs.
Instead, download and then install Microsoft Office 2011, which is the current version for Macs. Here's the download link:
