Option-V will give you √, but not the line above the ensuing text. To obtain a proper representation, you'll need to use equations.

If you use the Equation Editor in Word 2008, you can

    a. use Tools->Customize Keyboard, select Category Insert, find InsertEquation in the list of commands, and assign a new keystroke (e.g. I used cmd-' here)

    b. click cmd-' to start the Equation Editor (you'll have to wait until it appears before you do the next step)

    c. click cmd-r to insert a radical (root) template

    d. type what you need

    e. click cmd-u to put the result in your Word document

    f. click cmd-w to close the Equation editor

If you need nth roots, you can use

    cmd-t N

in step c, but you will need to use left arrow to insert the radical, and so on.
