have a mac using word 14.2.3. Need to print on some 8in by 5in file cards. I am having a problem getting this simple task done. Using a laser printer. Any ideas?

No Trouble.

Go to Page Page set up (make sure you printer is set as your default printer).
go down to page size and 5 x 8 index cards.
Go to button just below setting og number of copies.
Scroll down to bottom and give a name.
From now on you can just select that preset.

You will have to adjust Margins accordingly. Type or insert your content. Save document. Then print using this preset.

See this link I would rather use a different screen grab program that allows me to upload to skydrive so I can insert here but it doesn't allow multiple layers of capture.
