How do I disable complex script?

I've recently found (after replacing my Normal template) that Ctrl+I doesn't just give me italic, or non-italic, but also something called ‘complex script’, which shows up in tracked changes. I’m not sure what this is, as the text doesn’t look any different. It’s annoying, because it doesn’t bring up anything when I do a F&R for an italic term. Can anyone shed light on this?

I’ve looked on the Internet, but can't find the tick box for ‘Install files for complex script …’ under ‘Region and Language’. I’m working with Word 2010.

Does the issue occur with specific document or with all documents?

Are you able to change the text to italic from ‘Home’ tab > ‘Font’ group?

Have you enabled the ‘Track Changes’ option?

Provide the complete pop up message window you receive.

Ensure you have selected the option ‘Final: Show Markup’ under ‘Review’ tab **> ‘Tracking’**group.

If the issue with all documents then try the steps provided in the article mentioned below and check if that helps:

The Complex Script Font appears when there is an editing language which requires it such as Arabic in the Word's settings.  To remove it, go to File -> Options -> Language and remove from the list of Choosen Editing Languages any Editing Language requiring the use of Complex Script Font (like Arabic) then restart Word.

It's also possible that parts of your document use this language; even if it's only for a few blank spaces here and there; therefore you should also remove the language formating for all of your document.  Select All of your document then go to Language -> Set Proofing Language... -> Mark Selected text as: -> chose English.

In this same dialog box, you should also set English as the default language used for Proofing (click on the "Set As Default" button after having highlighted English and it's also better to uncheck the "Detect language automatically" option.  Save your document, close Word and when Word ask you if you want to save the Normal.Dot file, say Yes.

Finally, you should also uncheck the option "Automatically switch keyboard to match language of surrounding text" in Options -> Advanced -> Editing Options.

After all this, you shouldn't have any more problem with the Complex Script Font features of Word.

The issue occurs with all documents. I had thought it might be something to do with documents I've received from a client, which have a different template. There is no pop-up box, but, with tracked changes switched on, the change shows as 'Formatted: Font: Italic, Complex Script Font: Italic'. If I didn't have tracked changes switched on, I wouldn't know it was complex script. I can change the text to italic under Fonts, and then the tracked change doesn't show up with 'complex script', but it's a slower way of working, and I want to know why 'complex script' is showing up in these direct formatting changes. On another thread, someone said to untick a box for 'install files for complex script', but I haven't been able to find this box under 'Region and Language'.
