I want to insert a piece of graph paper (approx 1/3 of an A4 sheet) onto my word document.  It is a work sheet for children - they will then draw a graph onto it.

I think I found precisely what you need. This site with the funny name offers a series of PDF-generators to create many kinds of grids. You'll probably want the Squares gallery. There's a lot of customization available, even an option to create PDFs of non-standard sizes (like "1/3 of an A4 sheet").

Once you've download the PDF (it will go into your home folder's Download folder), just drag it over into your Word document, where you can fine-tune its size by dragging from the handles (use corners only to keep the proportions), even select Format Picture > Cropand trim it from all sides (for instance, to eliminate the watermark at the bottom).

I'm assuming this document is to be printed for the tykes to draw their graphs? If so, the best suggestion I can offer is to use File> Project Gallery - New, select Home Essentials from the list of categories, then pick the Graph Paper templates of your choice.

The document will be generated as an Excel Workbook. Select the range of cells that meets your size requirement, then hold Shift while you select Copy Picture from the Edit menu & choose the 'when printed' option in the little dialog that pops up. Paste the picture into your Word document.

Your attempted contribution [albeit 3.5 years after-the-fact :-)] is appreciated, but it does not address the actual question that originally was posed for at least 3 reasons:

    • The OP is using Office 2008 for Mac, which has no "Design tab" or Ribbon. What you suggested can be done, but the steps to be taken are quite different, &
    • That method causes a grid to be applied edge-to-edge to the entire page of every page in the document. The OP expressed interest in having a grid only on 1/3 of a single page, &
    • Although the same fill can be used for a Rectangle (to constrain the size), even the Large Grid pattern most likely is too small for the purpose.

Getting graph paper on Microsoft Word/excel is something that you can easily do with the "Insert" feature.

You can use Word or Excel to make graph paper.

    Step 1

Open Word, and then open an existing file, or click the “Blank document” button on the main start screen to open a new document.

    Step 2

    Click the “Design” tab.

    Step 3

Click the “Page Color” button on the ribbon, and then choose “Fill Effects.”

    Step 4

Click the “Pattern” tab, and then choose either the “Small grid” or “Large grid" pattern. To help you tell which pattern you’re selecting, click one to see its name show in the box above the color chooser menus.

    Step 5

Leave the Foreground and Background color choosers as their default black and white, and then click the “OK” button. You can instead choose a mid-blue color for the Foreground for an old graph paper look.

    Hope this help
