I prefer the direct method of using Alt+nnnn to get the ASCII character. You can refer to the following table to get the ASCII code for each letter:

         ![](https://wcoeyq.sn2.livefilestore.com/y1mgsuWZg6OKr_6N5gFf6MXc1ffJ28i7f8pFFyE_oJTVPbepRdHAWD-MhXvGVdQ4tPJO6inJMeA8wTt31migmNUL5-LpbW1qsbrN_xsb294FIZLwN-xtYEumQ/Foreign_Characters.PNG?psid=1)

Hold down one of the Alt keys and tap the four digit associated with each ASCII character on the NumPad with NumLck on.

Alternate methods include getting the character from the Insert tab's Symbol command. You can also set up an AutoCorrect entry to replace U ·<period>· <period> with Ü.

For Ö hold down the Alt key and type 214 on the numeric keypad

For Ü hold down the Alt key and type 220 on the numeric keypad

For ö hold down the Alt key and type 246 on the numeric keypad

For ü hold down the Alt key and type 252 on the numeric keypad

    Afrah,

    For MS Office Word

Hold down Ctrl and : then let go of both and then type the letter you want the symbol over, for example -

    Ctrl with :

    then a

    to get ä

    Ctrl with :

    then Shift key with a

    to get Ä

    Ctrl with :

    then o

    to get ö

    Ctrl with :

    then Shift key with o

    to get Ö

If, like mine, your keyboard requires the Shift key to use : you would end up with these combinations

Ctrl with Shift key and :

    then a

    to get ä

Ctrl with Shift key and :

    then Shift key with a

    to get Ä

Ctrl with Shift key and :

    then o

    to get ö

    Ctrl with Shiftkey and :

    then Shift key with o

    to get Ö

    Denis

Add a 0 in front of the numbers and they will work:

For Ö hold down the Alt key and type 0214 on the numeric keypad

For Ü hold down the Alt key and type 0220 on the numeric keypad

For ö hold down the Alt key and type 0246 on the numeric keypad

For ü hold down the Alt key and type 0252 on the numeric keypad
