I just figured this one out. It had something to do with the headings. I selected "normal" and the white background disappeared.

When I select "no fill" for my text box, the space behind the type is all white, so I can't layer my text box on top of clip art that I want to use as a background.
For instance, I have a flag in the background and want to put the name of my event on top of it. I've done this for years but suddenly, I'm getting white fill behind my text. Even changing the grouping order isn't helping.
I've never encountered this issue before.

For so long I've been struggling with copy and paste text from websites or google docs to word with that white backgroud...
The answer is simple.
On mac:
Select all text needed to apply formatting to.Then
Format > Borders and Shading > Shading
No Fill
and now the magical part!!
<< APPLY TO: >>
Text
VOILA!
I solved this by doing the following:
Problem solved!
I had this problem (on a Mac) and the only thing that worked was to cut and paste the text into Text Edit--and remove all formatting then cut and paste it back into the text box. Trying to change the text settings in Word itself didn't work but that did.
This did not fix the same issue that I am having. What is special(i.e the configuration/setting) about the "normal" style that removes the white around the text?
