Excel XP has stopped working

Whilst working on an Excel document suddenly the computer did a reboot - due to the installation of updates from Microsoft that I had put off for 4 hours!

Opening Excel now with any .xls document, or on its own, gives the message:

" Microsoft Excel has stopped working

Windows can check online for a solution to the problem.

    1)  Check online for a solution and close the program

    2)  Close the program

    3)  Debug the program

View problem  details "

Option 1 starts a process with a progress bar and then suddenly closes without message, and without changing anything apparently

Option 2 just closes the program - and nothing else

Option 3 quite rapidly goes to a very similar error message, but without the debug option!

The details at the bottom of this message gives:

I have tried repairing the the Office installation using the original CD, and also deleting all of Office and then installing it all again.  To no avail - something has "stuck" in an error mode. Can anyone help please?

    Try the following steps:

Right click on Excel (.exe) > select ‘run as admin’; Once Excel is opened you may disable the add-ins.

Close Excel and reopen to check if it helps.

To access Excel (.exe), open the following location:

    Windows 7 32bit: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10

    Windows 7 64bit: C:\Program Files(x86)\Microsoft Office\Office10

    Method 1:

Browse to the below location and delete the files from the Excel startup folders:

    C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\XLStart

    C:\Users\User Name\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART

Note: Take a backup of files before deleting the files:

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Back-up-the-registry

    Method 2:

If the above step fails, then remove Excel and then reinstall it.

Go for Control panel> Programs> Programs & features> highlight Office 2002> Change> click on drop down of Excel and make it not available.

Note: Ensure to take a backup of the registry and then delete the Excel folder/keys.

Click on Start, All Programs, Accessories and click on RunType ‘regedit’ (without quotes) in the run windows and click ok.

    Browse to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office.

    Browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office.

    Browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Office.

Once deleted go to the same location to install Excel, Start> Control panel> Programs> Programs & features> highlight Office 2002> Change> click on drop down of Excel and make it available.

    Method 1:

You may try to open Excel in safe mode and check if it helps.

    · Hold Windows key + R.

    · Copy and paste, or type the following command in the Open box, and then press Enter:

    Excel /safe

Note: There is space between Excel and /

If it opens fine in Excel safe, try to disable the add-ins and check if it helps:

    http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/excel-help/load-or-unload-add-in-programs-HP005203732.aspx

    Method 2:

Ensure that keyboard language is set correctly, follow the below suggestions:

    Open Control Panel

    • In view mode ‘View by Category’, find the section ‘Clock, Language and Region’
    • Click ‘Change Keyboards or other input methods’ and then Change Keyboards
    • Click on Add and Scroll down to “English (United States)” and expand.
    • Ensure to US is selected
    • Press OK.

I cannot open Excel either directly or as administrator. I can open it in safe mode when it reconfigures itself and re-attaches the only add-in that I deleted viz. the analysis toolpack.  In safe mode  I deleted the analysis toolpack and logged out. Excel still produced the same error on trying to log in normally

I think we can safely say that the problem is nothing to do with add-ins, but something to do with getting into the program - you will recall I deleted the Office installation and  did a complete re-installation, so there should be nothing wrong with the program.

     itself.

Does anyone know how the program opens- that is the non-excel parts that are needed that i could check?  I suspect the registry, since this seems very prone to problems. My registry cleaner (Regzooka) found as usual numerous 'problems', but after its clean the Excel problem remains.

Many thanks for all your suggestions. Keep them coming in please until we crack this!

Excel opens in safe mode. The only add-in was the analysis toolpack which I removed apparently successfully. However the problem remains loading Excel normally. Interestingly if I now load excel in safe mode again MS Office is reconfigured (timing bar shows progress) and the analysis toolpack is readded!

Have you any further suggestions please?

Many thanks for your help so far!
