How do I turn off my keyboard's alternate characters?

I've inadevertantly entered key strokes that have turned "on" the red alternate characters on my keyboard.

What are the keystrokes I need to turn my keyboard back to regular characters?

Oddly enough, those alternate characters are not recognized in this message and the question mark is actually a question mark

Try alt and the left shift key pressed at the same time.

That is a way that Windows uses to switch between installed languages but has nothing to do with red symbols on your keyboard.

Not helpful.  Can you suggest a combination of keystrokes that I can try?

try Control Panel > Regional and Language Options > Keyboards and Languages tab > Change Keyboards button > Advanced Key Settings tab. This will show you the key combo you are looking for.

In the General tab > you can see the keyboards installed. If you aren't using them, uninstall the extras.

It depends on the computer. Check with your manufacturer.
