Wrong Office 2010 Icons - how do I get the correct ones back?

I'm new to these forums, so hello.

My HP Pavilion dm4 with Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 (64-bit) came with Office Starter. I decided to purchase Office 2010 Professional Plus (with a discounted price offered from work). When I had tried to open word documents, they opened in Office Starter, so I changed the default program from the "Microsoft Office Client Virtualization Handler" (which came with Office Starter I guess) to Microsoft Word. Now word documents open in Microsoft Word 2010 by default like they should.

However, by changing the default, the icons for word documents have changed from the normal word icon to a blank icon with lines and a "DOCX" written on the bottom of the icon. Also, a given word document (when I right click and select properties) is marked as "Type of file: DOCX File (.docx)" instead of "**Type of file: Microsoft Word Document (.docx)"**like it should be.

My countless hours searching online for a fix have failed. I tried changing the file association in Control Panel -> Default Programs, but that didn't work. I tried uninstalling Office Starter and then reinstalling Office 2010 Professional Plus with no luck, so I system restored back. If I try to open a document with Office Starter, it now asks me for a product key which doesn't make any sense since that is supposed to be a free limited version that shipped with the laptop. I can still open everything with Office 2010 Professional Plus, but if I set Microsoft Word 2010 as the default, then I get the wrong icons. If I want to keep the icons, I have to have the default as the Microsoft Office Client VIrtualization Handler, which will start Word Starter that I can't even open now.

I am positive that Office Starter is causing this problem with the icons somehow because only word documents and excel spreadsheets are effected (not PowerPoint, Access or other programs that come with Office 2010 Professional) AND because on my Vista desktop that has Office 2010 (and has never had Office Starter), I have no problems at the moment.

**How can I keep the proper Office 2010 icons while having Microsoft Word 2010 (instead of the Virtualization Handler that initiates the starter edition) as the default for .docx files?**I'm surprised that more people haven't had this issue because a lot of computer come with Office Starter and I'm sure a lot of people buy an upgraded version like I did. Thank you for any assistance you can provide, and I'll be happy to provide more information / clarification if necessary.

It sounds like an error in file association, or at least a partial error (icon only)

First thing I would suggest is simply doing an inplace Repair of Office 2010 Pro:

    Repair or Uninstall Office 2010 - http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/excel-help/repair-or-remove-office-2010-HA010357402.aspx?CTT=1

You could also try this MS Fixit: http://www.askvg.com/microsoft-releases-fix-for-random-incorrect-icon-change-problem-in-windows-xp-vista-and-7/  (Please let us know if it works.

If that doesnt' work, try some of these techniques to fix file associations. It may be that by redoing the file associations you will pick up the correct icons:

File will not open on double click - File Association

Here are a whole bunch of ways of fixing "file association" (that's "windows speak") problems. Just work your way though ones you have not tried yet until you find one that works:

Note: if you have the Click-To-Run installation of Office Starter and you have “normal” installation of other version of Office you have to decide which version is going to have file association. Only one can be invoked by double clicking on file. Normally that would not be Starter.

Try repairing your Office installation, for example via Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel.

    Re-register the application

There are several different ways you can reset the proper file associations. Word itself provides a way to do it. Open a command prompt window and, at the command line, enter the following:

    winword /r

Nothing seems to happen when you press Enter, but Word will reregister itself back in Windows. In the process, it resets the file associations for the files it uses, such as DOC and DOT files. You can close the command prompt window and double-click on a document; Word should start right up.

    Alternate Re-register the application

Close the app. Open the Run Window: <WIN> R, use the following command (Modify the Path to match your specific installation):

    "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\winword.exe" /unregserver

The quotes are necessary, but you may need to change the path so it reflects the location of the winword.exe file on your system. (You can use Windows’ Search tool to locate the path to the winword.exe file.) The /unregserver switch “unhooks” all the references to Word in the Windows Registry.

You should then, immediately, use the following command:

    "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\winword.exe" /regserver

This command causes Word to rewrite all its Registry keys and to reassociate itself with document and template files. Now you can double-click a document file and see if Windows starts Word and opens the document.

    In Windows 7:

    1. Right-click the file,
    2. Select "Open With"   select [Your Program Here]
    3. Check always use this program.

Alternate method of associating file type with program:

    ·Click Start

·type cmd in the run dialog box then press ok.

·On the command prompt line type "control panel" without the quotation marks.

·In control panel > folder options > file types > new (button) in the new window click advanced.

·In the file extension dialog box type the file extension to fix, ie: exe.

·In the drop down menu locate and select application > click ok.

Sometimes one of these works when you're having trouble with double clicking on the file in windows explorer:

    (xl2003 menus) - Tools|Options|General|Uncheck "Ignore other applications"

(xl2007) Office Button|Excel Options|Advanced|General|Uncheck "Ignore other applications that use DDE"

Uninstalling is such a brute force fix.  Especially when it comes to Starter. There are no Starter installation files available to users. It can only be installted at the factory. As a result, the only way a user can re-install starter is to use the recovery partition to re-install Windows and all of the factory default "crapware".

There is one good reason to delay uninstalling Starter. Starter is the only edition of office that will allow you to create a "Portable Office" installed on a USB drive!

We would need to remove and re-install any prior office versions prior to installing the newer version of office 2010

use the fix-it in the link below and remove and re-install Office 2010 Pro Plus

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301

I already tried uninstalling Office Starter before reinstalling Office Professional Plus and that didn't work. What else can I do?
