Will installing 365 really wipe out all other versions?

Hi Folks,

I have been running 365 Preview on my machine with 2003, 2007 and 2010 install, no problem.

Today I purchased 365 Pro download and recieved the following email:

"Thank you for your purchase.  IMPORTANT: If you have a full previous version of an office suite, whether it is 2003, 2007, 2010 or earlier, on your computer you need to completely remove this before beginning the download for the 365 version.  Your files will not be removed they will just become temporarily inaccessible until the 365 version is installed. "

My suspicion is that they don't know what they are talking about but it would be a disaster if I wiped out older versions of Excel.  So before I proceed, can someone verify if 365 Pro can be installed without wiping out prior version as we have always been able to do?

TIA,

Shane

I have chosen to experiment.  It seems that no one knows for sure what would happen.  Therefore, I installed Office 365 Pro on a machine running only Office 2010.  The installation appeared to be a successful.  So I have now installed it on a machine with Office 2003, 2007 and 2010 also installed.  Prior to doing the installation, I uninstalled the Preview version.  Then I ran the Fix It but when I was asked if I wanted to uninstall Office, I said no.  The install wen to completion without incident.

I have tested all 4 versions of Excel and they all appear to be performing correctly.  I have also tested all four versions of Word and PowerPoint, one add-in caused a problem in Word 365 but this may have nothing to do with the install.  In all cases my testing was limited due to the amount of time I have.

Of course Outlook only allows one active version so I have had a brief look at Outlook 365.  I would have liked the install to have run like previous versions in that it asked about each component you wanted to install, but that is not an option which I believe is a bad decision on Microsoft's part.  I have not tested any of the other application yet.

    Hi Rohn,

    You've verified what I've discovered.

Do you know about the "NoReReg" registry "hack"?  - I've never needed it for Excel, but does this work for Access?

    Thanks,

    Shane

I have been running Office 2003, 2007, 2010, and 2013 (local install) on Windows 8  since October with essentially no problems (other than a Windows file associations).

"They" do know what they are talking about, but what they want and what we (as users) want are 2 very different things. MS REALLY wants people to abandon all earlier versions. But you don't have to. As Anula pointed out, Office 365 is running in a virtual machine that isolates it's code entirely from any programs you have installed on the machine, including older versions of Office.

Outlook is the one exception. You can only have one version installed locally, but you apparently can also have it in Office 365 beside a local install.

Do you know about the "NoReReg" registry "hack"?

    Hi,

I did not recieve an error message - 1. I recieved an email from the site where I purchased the software - discountmountainsoftware.  2. I did not try the install because of their email.  3. I have Office 365 Preview installed on the system with 2003, 2007 and 2010 and everything works fine.

    1. Did you purchase Office 2013 program or Office 365 Program? - Office 365
    2. Which is the earlier version of Office installed on the system? - 2003, 2007, 2010
    3. Did you uninstall Office 365 Preview installed on the system? - I will before I run the install.

Office 365 program co-exists with earlier versions on Office installed on the system. But if you have installed Office 2010, 2007 and 2003 on the same system then there are chances that Office will not function properly. It’s recommended not to install Office 2010, 2007 or 2003 on the same system.

Ensure to uninstall Office 365 preview installed on the system before installing Office 365 full version. Run the automated troubleshooter from the following article to remove all traces of the new Office installed on the system.

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2739501

Note: If you are using a 64-bit operating system, save the fixit tool on the system and then run it from the saved location.

Once the uninstallation is complete reboot the system.

    Hi Shane,

Thank you for contacting Microsoft Community and we will be glad to assist you with your concern. As per the issue description you receive an error message to uninstall the earlier versions of Office installed on the system before installing Office 365 program.

I would like to ask few questions on the issue:

    1. Did you purchase Office 2013 program or Office 365 Program?
    2. Which is the earlier version of Office installed on the system?
    3. Did you uninstall Office 365 Preview installed on the system?

I hope the above suggestion helps. If you need further assistance on this issue provide us more information and we will be glad to assist you.

    Thank you.
