How do I print a document on both sides of a page?

I have documents that are sometimes two pages. I would like them to print on one page, both sides. Any direction or advice I will greatly appreciate. I've gone to the FILE tab, then to OPTIONS, then to QUICK ACCESS where I  was to find SHRINK PAGE or something that would be a solution. But, there is no "SHRINK PAGE"  or anything else that I would interrupt to have a document print on both side of the page. Oh yes, my printer is capable of printing on both sides (HP OfficeJet Pro 8500 Wireless). Help please?

If both Word Starter edition and the printer driver allow duplex printing then, you will find the option in File > Print > Settings.

If either does not allow duplex printing. Print page 1 on one side of the paper, turn the paper over and print page 2 on the back.

I tested this to see what would happen if I enabled duplexing in the printer Properties, and I found that it made Word display "Print on Both Sides, Flip on long edge." I then tested to see what would happen if I changed the setting in Word to "Print One Sided." I returned to the printer Properties and saw that duplexing was still set to "Automatically," which suggests to me that this printer turns the decision over to Word (at least in Word 2010; in Word 2003, I imagine it would just duplex, as Word 2003 doesn't offer those printing options). This is not a new printer (HP Officejet Pro K5400 purchased in December 2008), but evidently it's just more cooperative with Word than yours is.

It's like you say, if it isn't  in SETTINGS I'll have to do it manually. Son-of-a-gun. In SETTINGS there is a choice of "1 page per sheet/2 page per sheet, and, and" when you select that it prints literally both front and back of the document on one side of the page. Rather than a 8.5" X 11" it turns it sidewise and prints it 11" X 8.5". As I said, "it's like  you said - it'll have to be done MANUALLY." Not that it's the worst thing in the world, but... Word Perfect allows you to print double sided... Hmm.

Thank you very much for taking the time and offering the direction. I've printed your reply and am keeping it in my WORD folder. I'm a recent user of WORD, moved over from Word Perfect cuz WP doesn't do all that it's supposed to in WINDOWS 8.

    Be well,

As you said, there is the "Printer Properties," which has - I guess the ability of my printer. Anyway, it does have the "two sided (duplex) printing" which I highlighted and selected (which is all I ever had to do with the other word processor. On the FILE, PRINT drop down nowhere on my is there a choice of "Print on Both Sides." On the selection that has "Print One Sided," the other choice is "Manually!" So it would look like I'm doomed to printing duplex manually. Son-of-a-gun!

Thank you very much for your input. Seems like you have a very good understanding about MS Word. It will take me awhile, but I am trying to learn. The best part of that is, the help this site offers.

    Be well,

Duplexing (printing on both sides of a sheet) is different from printing "2 pages per sheet" (two pages on one side of a sheet). Duplexing is controlled by your printer Properties. On the Print tab of the File backstage, beneath Printer click on "Printer Properties." This will open a dialog generated by your specific printer driver. This is not part of Word but will vary depending on the printer, so we can't give specific instructions on where to find the duplexing setting, but it will be somewhere in the Properties if your printer has the ability to duplex automatically.

Additionally, if your printer is capable of duplexing automatically, then the dropdown list under Settings that by default says "Print One Sided" will also offer options for duplexing; mine has "Print on Both Sides, Flip pages on long edge" and "Print on Both Sides, Flip pages on short edge."

If your printer is not capable of duplexing automatically, then yes, you must duplex manually. Under Settings: Print One Sided, the dropdown list will offer only "Manuall Print on Both Sides" as an alternative to "Print One Sided."
