I have downloaded the Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2010 Free Trial and when it came to installing it, I entered the product key I got and it said "This is not a valid Office Product key. See above examples to learn more".

I have taken my backup DVD and tried to use it on my new PC, so that I could load MS Office Professional Plus 2010.  I used the product key sent to me in an email which is FHXYK-P68D9-PKXVV-QPB73-7KDCK     THIS DID NOT WORK

Following might help (it's from Microsoft documentation):-

During the order process you will receive the 25-character (XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX) product key on the “Download” and “Thank you” page.

You may also find the product key in your order confirmation email sent immediately after the order completed.

If you do not have your confirmation email, you can also retrieve your product key by viewing the details of your download using the Order History link on the store where you made the purchase from.

Click here to access your Account (you will need your user ID and password to log in to Windows Live ID).

That's HeiDoc.net web site does not contain any 2010 trial versions, they are the actual installation files, and to install requires that you have a 2010 Pro Plus Key

If you selected the correct file it would been the full installation file, it wouldn't have been a link to any MS site.

Since MS stopped distributing 2010 Pro plus Trial versions some considerable time ago the link you gave will produce nothing

Currently you can only obtain Office 2013 or 365 trial versions

Where did you download the trial from, from here?

    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/ee390818

And the Key you used was one that was emailed to you?

Was there any other version of Office allready install, even a trial? If so you have to uninstall the trial first, before installing Pro Plus
