Once format-as-table applied, how can I unformat  it afterwards?

OK. If I understand, you have a table and assign one of the default styles displayed in the Table Design tab. Use the Undo command (Ctrl+Z) to undo the applied table style. Or use Ctrl+Alt+U (with the cursor in the table) to remove all table styling to start from an unformatted table again.

Alternatively, Table Normal (identified as Clear Format or something of the sort) is the second style in the gallery.

I believe the original submitter wants to remove the table entirely.  Creating a table is done by clicking "Format as Table."

To do it there are two steps:

    1. On the Table Tools, Design tab, click "Convert to Range"
    2. Then under the Styles section of the home ribbon, click Normal to remove all the highlighting and borders

Select the table you want to reset. Go to Design menu. Then go to Table Styles and click None.

But that just removes table borders; it doesn't convert the table to text.
