Text turns to red & stricken through when editing

I am trying to edit a Word 2007 document created by someone else.  It does not show any protection or restricted editing.  When I try to delete a word, paragraph, etc., the text does not delete and rather turns red with a strike through.  I am using Word 2010.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Track changes has been turned on. Perhaps the author wants to know exactly what you change.

If you're certain that you don't want to keep track of changes to the document:

Activate the Review tab of the ribbon.

The "Track Changes" button should be highlighted. Click it to turn it off.

Next, click the lower part of the Accept button and select "Accept All Changes in Document".

Forget the superfluous BS and simply go somewhere on your Doc and type BS. Next: do a (Control Shift E) which is what turned on "tracking changes" this will center for Word and Excel. Now apparently this turns "tracking changes" off and you can finish normally whatever you are doing. "Your Welcome".

The additional information in Hans's answer is not "superfluous BS". Yes, Ctrl+Shift+E is the shortcut to toggle Track Changes on and off, but just turning it off is not enough. Changes that have already been tracked must be accepted (or rejected, depending on your intentions) or they'll remain marked up with red color and/or strikethroughs and underlines.

    Steve,

Seems to me you have track changes active. See this article from Shauna Kelly:

    http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/sharing/howtrackchangesworks.html

Scroll down to item 2 How to turn track changes on and off.

For the changes already marked, on the Review tab, in the changes group, click on the Accept button and accept all changes.
