How to make table margins obey margin settings?

Hello:

When you set page margins, and add a table to a page, you can drag the table edges outside the set page margins without "punishment" :-). How would you make the table edges obey the page margins? And/or where can you see the margin values for the edges of a table?

Sorry if this is simplistic, but I actually have never seen answers to the above questions, although I have only used 2010 for a while.

Regards,

Hans L

To quickly resize a table which is "too wide," use the Table Tools Layout tab | AutoFit | AutoFit Window. (To make sure column widths stay fixed, afterwards you may want to click Table Tools Layout | AutoFit | Fixed Column Width.)

Also, note that, by default, Word adjusts for cell margins when placing the table borders/edges. You can set the left and right cell margins to zero for a given table.

In addition to what Stefan has said, there is a Compatibility Option that determines whether tables are allowed to extend beyond the margins (aside from the little bit that puts borders outside the margin in order to align the text in the cells with text outside the table). Go to File | Options | Advanced and scroll all the way to the bottom, where you see Layout Options. Click to open the list and make sure that the box for "Allow tables to extend into margins" is not checked.
