If you change the tmp file's extension to doc, docx or docm, depending on the type of document it was based on, you may be able to open it. However, some tmp files are 0 bytes long, and don't have any content; others have no meaningful content.

Note that you should be able to open an AutoRecover (*.asd) file directly from within Word (via File | Open), without changing the filename extension. If that fails, you are out of luck, I'm afraid.

I have read just about all knowledge bases on this site - perhaps missed a couple.

I am only a beginner when it comes to Word 2007 and computers. Do not like looking or changing options just in case.

I have seen other people loose large data

Thanks for all the helpful links and easy to follow instructions.

I recently had to reinstall Microsoft. Therefore all settings are default. So I can gain the option of such extensions as .tmp and .asd - would I have to go into the options and create a back up and as an extra layer of gaining a back up - Graham Mayors site?

Thanks you all in assisting me. Glad I was not the only one.
