I created a Word document that included check boxes that I inserted using the Symbol Browser.  When I print my document, the symbols (check boxes) do not show up (in preview) or print on the document.

This is what works for me:

    1. Insert > Symbol > Advanced Symbol
    2. Select font "Wingdings"
    3. Click on any of the squares on the third row, or the one on the fourth row (the last one is the one I use)

As mentioned by Bob, there is a narrower version of the square (a rectangle, actually) that is non printing as its ASCII code is that of the DEL (delete) key. In the Symbol character palette, it's located between the **~**and the Ä and it should not even be listed. Some fonts show it as a blank space.

Yeah, the Symbol Browser can be a little funky at times but I don't know why. That specific symbol [ ☐ ] is particularly problematic. It may be due to font conflicts but is difficult to recognize because the character used to indicate a missing character looks very much the same.

Try reinserting the symbol -- it should appear to be a little larger & darker than what is currently there. If that doesn't work, select the symbol in the document & change the font to Wingdings.

It might also be worth while to do as described here: **Font Weeding.**
