Lync Audio device problem

All of a sudden my lync 2013 x64 stopped recognizing my Audio device. If i go to settings=> audio devices i get a yellow box saying "We didn't find an audio device, which you need for calling. If you have one already, try checking Windows Device Manager to make sure it's installed and working."

I uninstalled/reinstalled audio drivers, checked if Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder services are running, checked all USB hubs if they had sleeping mode enabled, even uninstalled/reinstalled Lync; no luck. I cannot figure out what could be causing this, my audio works just fine, skype works fine and i even installed lync 2010 which works fine too.

For some reason lync 2013 cannot detect my audio device; I also installed a usb headset, not working either.

Can anyone please help me on this?

I use to have the lync  error "no audio device is found ...." I solved really simple... I just plug in the MIC too (even if it's not working), for some reason the LINK needs the speaker and the MIC to be able to setup a voice conference..... crazy but it's true...

I found the answer!!!!  at least for my flavor of the issue.  I apologize in that I am unable to require the exact posting or text that provided the lead to fixing my issue with Lync 2013.  However, I had another odd problem where certain youtube or news videos would not play the video portion -- only the audio.  With pure trial and error I found that the vids that would not play on my external 32" monitor would play properly by simply moving the app to my "extended screen" on my laptop.  The post I found established a similar idea regarding audio conflicts.

    My Solution:

    1. Enter Device Manager and DELETE All USB controller devices.
    2. Reboot
    3. After reboot open Lync 2013 Audio Options and select appropriate devices and settings
    4. Finish and confirm Windows installation of New Hardware as the system "rediscovers" the USB devices.

    Note:

This worked both by unplugging all USB devices before deleting them in Device Manager as well as leaving them connected.  My best guess as a non-techie is that Lync may have an issue with a single or narrow range with which it can discover Audio devices, and if the USB devices happen to snag one or more of what Lync thinks should be only used for Audio then Lync is Lost.  I've played around with different scenarios have not failed to have Lync successfully see and use Audio as long as Lync (or the Audio device) is able to establish its codes and resources prior to USB assignments. is able to select device codes and resources prior to the USB's assignment.

    Grace

What we discovered is that Lync's Audio requirement is not just for speakers but for a microphone. Without the microphone, it won't let you use your speakers, even if the session doesn't require a microphone.

In our experiment, by adding a USB headset (with microphone) to the PC, the Audio Device option could see the USB device and the PC's speakers. We could then choose the speakers and the audio came through it fine. Many of the Microsoft webinars on Lnyc are listen-only (no speaking), so that worked fine.

However, as soon as we unplugged the USB headset and restarted Lync, it would no longer use the speakers for sound.

They really need to allow speakers independent of microphones. Bad design requirement.
