Someone sent me what is supposed to be a word document, as an unknown file. When I open it, it appears as just symbols. How can I convert it to see the actual word document? Below is an example of what I am seeing, except the actual file is much longer.

If the file extension is DOC or DOCX and you are seeing this I suspect one of 2 possibilities:

either the document is encrypted, (password protected) or maybe part of the file has been lost, it has been corrupted.

Not much to be done about either problem. Only fix I can suggest is to ask the sender to resend it.
