    And to add a bit more:

    After changing the extension from PPT to PPS, the files will open in slide show view when you doubleclick them, then close again when the presentation ends.

    If you need to edit them again, simply start PowerPoint, then use File | Open to open them.

    <snip http://www.g-w.com/faq/difference-between-powerpoint-ppt-and-pps-files.aspx>PPT files are PowerPoint Presentation files. These files automatically open in edit mode when using the full Microsoft PowerPoint program.

    PPS files are PowerPoint Slide Show files. These files automatically open in slide show/presentation mode and are viewable on any computer using the free PowerPoint Viewer. This viewer can be downloaded for free from Microsoft.com.

    </snip>

    After you finish editing the presentation, just use File > Save As and select "PPS" instead of "PPT".

    To add slightly to what Rohn007 said, in 2003, you can just change the file extension from .ppt to .pps without even bothering with Save As. This does not work in later versions of PowerPoint with .pptx and .ppsx files.
