My family has 10 computers how can we use Office 365

Between laptops, desktops and tablets my wife, 2 kids and I have 10 pcs and at least 1 more coming to sit in our kitchen. How can we have Office 365 everywhere, like we should, when there is a 5 pc limit? I thought I heard something at the Build developer conference that this limitation was being removed but as of now I can't install on PC #6.

If this mistake of having the limit isn't being fixed is there another way I can do this? Getting a second account under a second email address for half the computers is a non-starter for many obvious reasons.

    Hi Mike,

Thank you for posting the question in Microsoft Community.

With Office 365 Home Premium subscription you can use Office on up to 5 PCs or Macs with just one subscription.

This is the reason you are not able to install it on the sixth computer.

In order to install the Office on rest of the five computers you need to buy another subscription apart from this there is no other option.

I hope the above information helps and if you any other query related Office reply I’ll be glad to help you further.

    Thank you

Technically, you are only allowed multiple installations for devices that you own, not your family. Each owner is supposed to have their own license. Microsoft looks the other way on what you are doing, but you are not entitled to do it.

Totally subjective, though: there is simply no reason a family of four should have 10 computers under the same roof.

    1. You show a complete ignorance of how the Office 365 account page allows you to add four additional users on the same license.
    2. You also show an attitude that "if I'm not smart enough to think of a reason, then there is no such reason."

I have ten computers in my house licensed under a single Office 365 license, and I'm the only one that lives here, or that uses them.  It's none of your business why.

Right now your only option is to get a second Office 365 license and use a second email address to administer it for computers 6 thru 10. You'll need a third license for computer 11+.

Actually, you are the prime target for 365 licenses, with so many devices in your home.  I'm on the flip side, with only 1 machine right now.  So beyond my loathing for 365 CTR technology, 365 does not make financial sense for people like me.

Hey, don't complain about the 5 PC per 365 license limit. It is quite generous considering it previously was at best 3 computers per license for home use, so you would have needed at least 4 of the old licenses!

I have never heard of any suggestion that the 5 limit would be increased or removed.  It doesn't make sense for MS to do it.  Actually, looking in my crystal ball, I could see in a year or two MS would start to cut back on that count, as a way to get MORE MONEY!

Using 10 or 11 volume licenses would probably be substantially more expensive than using 2 or 3 365 Home Premium licenses.

There is one more option. If you expect to use no more than 5 machines at a time, you could use "Office on Demand"

I ran into this same problem only yesterday.

I purchased a 365 licence from a shop to add to my existing 5 licences. That seemed simple enough to me. When I logged in and used the product code it informed me that I had extended the licence period for my current installations and it added no extra only an extra years subscription.

When I contacted Microsoft I found that I have to create a new account and that it will take them 3-5 days to remove the extra licence and reissue the product codes so I can use them on the two different accounts.

I can see this being a pain to administer for some small businesses / big households that need over the 5 licences but would be financially worse if they went to volume licencing. I see enough people struggling with multiple email accounts and passwords as it is.

My issue isn't so much with paying a little extra it's having multiple useless accounts. They can charge me more to have office on 10 computers instead of 5, that's reasonable, I just don't want to administer it under multiple accounts set up just so I can have multiple licenses. They could just say, 'for every 5 extra PCs you have to pay X dollars', I pay, they increase the number of installs I'm allowed and off we go.

Office on demand may be an option for the machines where office will be used less but easy access to email is important and I guess that would have to be through the browser or using the default mail client or something.
