I have a 2003 Excel file that has two protected sheets.  The unprotect menu item is greyed out and I cannot unprotect either sheet.  The file is not shared.  Any ideas on what causes this?

Hi Reeve,

As per the issue description you are unable to unprotect the Excel spreadsheet as the option is greyed out.

In order to troubleshoot on the issue follow the steps mentioned and check:

Step 1: Ungroup the sheets

Check if the sheets are grouped. If yes, ungroup the sheets and then check. To ungroup the sheet, hold the CTRL key and click once the sheet that is grouped.

Step 2: Open Excel in safe mode:

·         Close Excel.

·         Press the windows key+R on the keyboard to open the Run window.

·         In the Run Window type Excel /safe and click on Ok

Note: There should be a space between Excel and /.

Once you have opened Excel in safe mode open the Excel file in Excel by clicking on File Open and check if you are able to unprotect the sheet.

If Excel works fine in safe mode then try to disable the add-ins and check:

·         Click the Tools, Templates and Addins.

·         Under Manage Click the COM Add-ins

·         Uncheck all the Add-Ins listed under COM Add-ins.

·         Click close and restart Excel.

Thank you.
