Status Date Error?

Hello Everyone

I have an error in Microsoft Project Standard 2010 that I can not work out. I have a “sub project” which I have updated to the status date and everything is displayed as expected, 100% tasks ticked in the information column, status date is depicted as a red vertical line in the gantt chart etc. See screen shot below.

When I go into the “master project”, where I have twelve “sub projects” inserted similar to the one above, the status line is not depicted as it is in the “sub project”. There are also random individual tasks through the other eleven “sub projects” with the same apparent error. See screen shot below.

I have encountered the same error on the odd occasion in “sub projects” but I have not worried about it too much. Now that I am trying to display the “sub projects” in a “master project” it is far more inconvenient.

So the questions I have are as follows;

What am I doing wrong?

Is this a Microsoft Project Issue?

How do I fix the problem?

Below is a screen shot showing my computer system specifications just in case the problem is something to do with this.

I hope someone is able to help me out as this problem is very frustrating. Thanks in anticipation of your replies.

Best Regards

Gavin

    Hi John

You are probably right on all accounts. I think I'll leave it for a while and see how things go. If things continue to go pear shape I'll post on this thread again. In the mean time I'm trialling Project 2013, who knows this may solve some of the issues.

Anyway thanks very much for your help, it's always good having a second pair of eye's looking at a problem from a different point of view and your comments certainly prompted me to look in other areas that I might not have otherwise gone.

    Best Regards

    Gavin

    Hi John

    Yes, SP2 is installed.

Couple of points to clarify, the vertical red line is a progress line driven by the status date which is set in the Progress Lines dialog box.

I have been trying various scenarios since posting this query and have found that if I set the status date within a week of the current date everything seems to be fine, although this wasn't the case last week.

Hope the images below are more helpfull.

    Cheers

    Galvin,

Okay, let's backtrack a bit. Do you have SP2 installed? If not, install it.

Unfortunately the screen shots are to small to see anything. It might help if you just show the first 14 task lines. I don't need to see the ribbon but shots of both the subproject and master should have the same timescale and the same fields depicted as columns in the view.

Let's see what that shows and then go from there.

    Hi John

Thanks for the prompt reply, unfortunately it's not that simple. I am aware of all that you have said above and so I have the status date set the same in both the sub project and the master project.

    Cheers

    Galvin,

No, not an error, and here is why. A dynamic master does not actually contain the tasks of the subprojects, rather the master only contains a pointer to each subproject. Further, formatting in the master is independent of that in each subprjoect. The same is true of status dates. My guess is that the status date of your master is different from that of the subproject in question. Hence the progress lines that you see in the subproject will be based on the status date of the subproject, but the progress lines you see at master level are based on the status date of the master.

    Hope this helps.

    John
