Why won't web sites accept upload of .doc or .docx documents?

I've created a resume in both .doc and .docx formats.  But when I try to upload them to Monster or other job-related web sites, I get an error message saying that they aren't in an acceptable format.  They say they accept .doc and .docx,  so why won't they accept mine?

Hi Steven:

In addition to Phillip's suggestion, make sure that the file you are sending has a file name extension, and that the extension matches the content.

The file name extension .doc tells the receiving software that the file consists of a stream of bits, in binary format.

The file name extension tells the receiving software that the file contains a stream of computer code in XML format.

If either of those is not true, the website will be unable to process the file and will simply throw it on the floor.

I have sent stuff in to Monster from Word for Mac 2011: it works fine.  Word 2008 uses the same internal format.

Cheers

Do you have any spaces in the names of the files.

 example:

The Greatest Resume Ever wrote.docx

Some websites can't handle spaces (%20) (If Not they haven't updated their server software in about 10 years)

You either need to format as:

The_Greatest_Resume_Ever_wrote.docx

or:

TheGreatestResumeEverwrote.docx

Also keep the file name short and use only letters. Use no special characters like /+_)&*()
