excel 2010 autosum really not working (with time values)

Hi,

I have tried to get to the bottom of this issue for over an hour, very frustrating, can't understand what the problem is.

I have a problem with autosum not adding up the values correctly for a column of cells with time values in them.

The cells have amounts of time in them - hours, minutes and seconds.  I have tried to put in the SUM formula manually and have tried autosum too.

I have selected the correct range and hit enter and it gives me a total of zero 0.  After playing around with it a few times it gave me a different total, but it was still completely incorrect (far too small to be the right answer).

I have made sure that the formatting of the cells describes them as 'time' values and selected the hh:mm:ss option.

Thankyou very much for any advice

I had the same problem but found a solution. The problem is with the custom formatting for hours and minutes in excel which is h:mm. Examining other formats for hours, minutes and seconds I found this format [h]:mm:ss. This format includes brackets around the hour symbol so i decided to try this for hours and minutes [hh]:mm and it worked. I dont really why but it worked. The autosum was not the problem. Hope this works for you.

Check if there is a space

in front of text, or back.

I had the same problem and this fixed it for me too. Makes no sense why though.

    Hi,

I have tried it.  I have tried it in time format, custom format, all options.  It still gives me nothing, zero as the total.

I'm working from an existing document that I received, not one I'm creating so I can't make the changes before I write.

    Thanks anyway
