how to install equation editor in MS Word 2013 in Windows 8

Hello,

I just installed Word 2013 and want to add Equation Editor, but need instructions for Windows 8.

Normally, I would go to the add/remove programs in control panel, right-click on ms office-->change-->add/remove components..  But in Windows 8, my only change options are to 'fix this program'..

Thank you

    Hi Sailor_1212,

Your situation is not the same as in the original question. Sadly, Microsoft has made it nearly impossible for any mortal to keep track of the factors involved.

The first factor is that, while you have Office 2013, the description of the repair options indicates that it's the "Click to Run" installer that's delivered by the Office 365 subscription -- which is now what almost all retail customers get. This installer doesn't offer Add/Remove Features -- you get everything or nothing.

The MSI-file or "on premises" installer that was standard in all previous versions is now available only to volume licensees (mostly corporations) and MSDN subscribers (mostly developers), and the Add/Remove Features option is available only in that version.

The second factor is that the original poster was looking for the Equation 3.0 editor, the legacy equation feature from Word 2003 and earlier. It sounds like you're having trouble with the 2013 equations (Alt+= and use the items on the Equation Tools tab of the ribbon).

Do you mean that you can get Alt+= to start an equation, but that everything on the Equation Tools tab is grayed out? Or do you see something else?

In light of the differences, it might be better for you to start a new thread, fill out all the information about your Office and Windows versions, and fully describe what you do and what you see. You can use the rightmost button in the forum editor's toolbar to upload one or more screen shots if that would help to explain the problem.

    Continuing the steps:

After clicking Change and waiting for the installer to start, you'll see Add or Remove Features as the first choice on the first page. Click Continue.

On the second page, all the way at the bottom, expand the Office Tools category. Click the Equation Editor item and choose Run From My Computer. Click Continue and wait for the installer to finish.

There should be nothing that you have to do other that go to the Insert tab of the ribbon and in the text section, click on the Object drop down and select Object and then on the Create New tab of the Object dialog, select Microsoft Equation 3.0

Alternatively, click on the Equation drop down in the Symbols section of the Insert tab of the ribbon to use the newer equation facility.

But where do I find the 'add components' in Windows 8? I guss that's the real question I should have asked from the start, because as far as I can see, Windows 8 does not give me that option..

Doug, ISTR that, at least in previous versions, EE was not installed in a "typical" install, so it may be necessary to "Add or Remove Components" to add it.
