I don't have Word 365 Home Premium in front of me at this very moment, but you can try Alt+Shift+P which has worked in every version of Word since I can remember.

Page numbers are typically inserted in headers and footers so that is where it is "hidden"

Insert tab > Header & Footer group > Header drop down > Edit Header command. You now see the "Header & Footer Design" contextual tab. The insert Page Number command is in this tab.

You can also get to it via Insert tab > Quick Parts drop down > Field command.  Scroll down to PageNumber field.

i had same problem just keeps coming up as { page *\ mergeformat} i dont understand it had to hand in my assignment without page numbers today

Alt-F9 toggles display of field codes. (There is also a setting you can use in options but the keyboard shortcut does the same thing and is quicker.)

If you have used CTRL+F9 for the field brackets { } then ALT+F9 will toggle the field display.

The \* MERGEFORMAT switch is superfluous.
