I don't want to create a lot of slides, I just want one slide with an embedded Excel pivot table.  Is this possible?

You can certainly do the following:-

    1. If you wish to edit the Pivot Table within PowerPoint make sure that in the source EXCEL Workbook you set up the Pivot Table in a separate Worksheet from the underlying data.

    2. Go into EXCEL and highlight the required Pivot Table then:-

    CTRL-C

     - to copy it.

    3. Go into PowerPoint and click at the place where you wish to embed the Pivot Table just copied then:-

    Home tab

    Clipboard group

Click on the drop down arrow beneath:-

    Paste

     - then click on:-

    Paste Special . . .

    The:-

    Paste Special

     - window should open.

    4. In the:-

    Paste Special

     - window in the field called:-

    As:

     - make sure that:-

    Microsoft Office Excel Worksheet Object

     - is selected (if it's not already selected) then click on:-

    OK

I reckon that the above gives you what you want.

With an embedded object can you edit the pivot table in "slide show"?  I want to be able to change what the pivot table shows while in "slide show" without exiting the slide show, editing the pivot table, refreshing data, and re-entering slide show.

. . . that's not what you asked for in your first posting! <-which is why I clarified

but what you have is a picture of a pivot table not a pivot table.

No it isn't: it's a fully embedded Pivot Table in PowerPoint that you can edit in PowerPoint independently of the source data in EXCEL. <-But you can't edit it in slide view.  You have to exit slide view, edit the pivot table, re-enter slide view.  As long as you're in slide view, it is only a picture of a pivot table.

     Thanks for your help.

    Let me clarify...

With an embedded object can you edit the pivot table in "slide show"?  I want to be able to change what the pivot table shows while in "slide show" without exiting the slide show, editting the pivot table, refreshing data, and re-entering slide show.  I can certainly put in a pivot table as you describe, but what you have is a picture of a pivot table not a pivot table.
