Page Setup allows the paper size to be reset to A4 but the template stays US letter size, leaving a large margin to the right.

Thanks for this response:  it certainly returns a self-created template as A4 but it doesn't apply to, eg, the brochure template I'm trying to use, where altering Page Setup doesn't actually reset the artwork to A4.

Did you ever resolve this problem? When I change my page setup from US Letter to A5, the page size changes but the template does not shrink to fit! Help!!

    • Open the template type a letter or number (some type of character)
    • Now go to Page setup.
    • Set to A4.
    • Now go back to document from Page setup
    • Now remove the character you type.
    • Now go to File Menu.
    • Choose Save As...
    • Choose Template
    • Save as whatever the name was an add A4 to name.

Now when you open the "From New Template"

your revised version should be listed.

If you had created this template. Just save with same name.  (as a template).

Width (mm) Length (mm) Width (inch) Length (inch)
    A4 210 297 8.26 11.69
    US Letter 215.9 279.4 8.50 11.00

Page sizes are a given. In Word (and several other applications), to transform from one format to the other without losing the page layout, after changing the page size, you also need to tweak the margins, to keep text width and height identical:

if switching from US letter to A4, you should

    • DECREASE the left- and right-margins by a cumulative amount of 5.9 mm (divided between left and right), and
    • INCREASE top- and bottom-space by 17.6 mm.

Obviously, to switch from A4 to US Letter: vice versa :).

By doing this, the actual print layout should fall within an identical "rectangle" (proofing may still be required)...

PLEASE NOTE: some adjustments may still be needed for placement of headers, footers, etc.. For "in text" positioning of figures and tables, if included with "co-ordinates", these should refer to columns/margins, not page.

If this a pre-designed  template, it may not allow for alteration.

    1. What you may have to Do is create your Own Template
    2. Set up page before creating template
    3. Then once created  Save as template.

You could actually create a Brochure and save as a regular docx file then turn around and save as template under a new name, as dotx file. Using the old document as as Filler.
