DOUBLE-ARROWS INSTEAD OF QUOTATION MARKS

Word gives me double-arrows instead of quotation marks.  How can I fix this?  I am running MAC OSX 10.7.5 and MS Word 2011 for MAC, 14.3. 6.  I have selected the box in the "preferences" which elects "smart quotation marks," but when I hit the quotation mark key (shift '), I get the double-arrow instead (>>, except the two arrows are one character, nestled up together).  I am using Times New Roman font.  I can't find that character anywhere, let alone find out how to turn it off.  Any ideas?

Stefan is correct. You will get guillemets if the language applied to the text is French. If you change the language to English, you will get the expected quotation marks.

I just had the same thing happen. Go under Microsoft Word preferences and select the Autocorrect. You have to deselect the smart quotations option. They you get rid of the arrows.

Specifically, select all your text then click "French (France)" in the middle of the blue bar at the bottom of the window (at least, in Word 2013 on Windows 7).  While you have that dialog window open, consider changing your default language to "English (United States)" if it isn't.  (I have no idea how French had been selected.)

Sounds like the language specified for text is incorrect. See if you find the article at http://wordfaqs.mvps.org/MasterSpellCheck.htm useful (it was written for WinWord).

Alternatively, you could ask in the MacWord forum at http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/mac/forum/macword?tab=QnA. (Note that a moderator may move the entire thread to that location, in which case you don't have to repost, of course.)

Turning off typographical quotation marks seems like a drastic step. Did you first find out which language was applied to the affected text?
