How to get a Reference for a job?

I wasn't sure where to ask this question, since there doesn't seem to be a separate section for asking career-related questions.

If I wanted to list a reference, how can I do so? I know there is a Reference section under Microsoft careers, but it asks for the person's school, which doesn't make sense since my references is non-academic.
