i am setting up my new computer and adding autotext to the gallery ... but the autotext does not show up when i am typing ... even when i can see it clearly is in the gallery, NO autotext shows up ... not even months which normally automatically do ... like you start typing September, a little grey box with the word September shows up and i normally would hit enter to insert the word in the grey box ... why is this not working on my brand new computer ... brand new word 2010 ??? i am typing nothing but plain letters, nothing fancy, no formatting ...

I've just had this very same frustrating issue with a user I have just upgraded and found a solution that worked for her.

Basically, if the document zoom is high so that the scroll bar at the bottom appears, Autocomplete doesn't work. I know, dumbest thing ever right.

I reduced this particular users zoom from 170% to 150% and it started working. I wasted an hour on that.

What is the name of your AutoText entry? You must type at least four unique letters of the entry name before you will get the AutoComplete tip. If you have several entries that begin with the same letters, you must type more letters until you have entered a unique string.

I have the same situation as you, hoolagal. I also type medical reports and really missed autocomplete with Word 2007. I purchased Office 2010 specifically so I could get Word 2010 and get this feature back.

I have also checked all the options boxes, changed templates, re-entered the autotext entries multiple times, checked the "special words" to ensure they were different and the proper length, etc., etc. I still don't get an autocomplete box. Yes, I know I can enter the words by hitting F3. That's not the point. For most high-speed typists, taking your hands off the main keyboard and your eyes from the screen is a slow down. That's the point of autocomplete.

There is absolutely no consistency in the way that autotext and autocomplete work in 2010. What a waste of my money to buy this program specifically for this feature and then it doesn't work.

Make sure that "Show AutoComplete suggestions" is selected in File | Options, Advanced category.

Also, note that AutoComplete only works for AutoText/Building Blocks saved in the Normal template or in the template attached to the current document.
