A user has created several styles that contact before and after spacing set to 1 line versus pts. Is this acceptable in Word 2010?

Thanks for your response Stefan. We're experiencing some weird behavior in documents that have several styles that include the "line" unit of measurement, along with the "pt" unit of measurement.

For example, the spacing before is 0pt and the spacing after is 1 line.

I'm wondering if the use of both units of measurement in one paragraph may be causing a problem?

The "line" unit of measurement will be supported if you type it into the Spacing After or Spacing Before box. It's a setting intended for some non-Western languages, if I remember correctly. You can change the spacing back to points by typing, say, 12 pt in the box(es).

That is a lot of questions, not related to the original one...

    1. The display of style name + formatting can be turned off via the Style Pane Options dialog box. In the Styles pane (Ctrl+Alt+Shift+S), click the Options link and deselect the settings under "Select formatting to show as styles." To save this to your template, select "New documents based on this template" before clicking OK.
    2. I need more information on this one. Describe exactly what you see.
    3. The PAGE field may have been changed via format switches. Press Alt+F9 and tell me what you see following PAGE in the field code.
    4. If the font is missing or damaged, Word substitutes a different font.
    5. By default, Word should suggest the Normal template for keyboard shortcuts. For AutoText (Building Block) entries, Word may suggest the Building Blocks.dotx file, which you can rename (with Word closed) if it has been damaged.
    6. If you are now using Word 2013, there is no longer a separate footnote continuation separator; separators and continuation separators are the same, unless you save to an older file format.
    7. Click the More button in the Find and Replace dialog box. Make sure that "Search" is set to "All."

Finally, no, you can't base a paragraph style on a character style.

    Hi Stefan,

I apologize for the delay in responding. Because of the combined line and point settings the spacing between paragraphs often appears as tripled or quadrupled.

Other "anomolies" that we are experiencing include:

    1. Direct formatting of text results in new styles being created with the direct formatting attributes appended to the new style name. The "Keep track of formatting" feature found in Advanced options is not selected by default. I recall this being a feature in previous versions of Word, but I can't seem to locate a way to turn it off in Word 2010.
    2. Self generating TOC's. We've seen it occur while the document is being editted as well as when it is being saved, and or closed and reopened.

    3. The value/format of page numbers in headers/footers cannot be changed, even though we've inserted section breaks

    1. The font applied to the paragraph symbol is often times different than the actual font of the text within the paragraph.

    5.  The default location where autotext entries and keyboard shortcuts are to be saved isn't always available. Oftentimes we'll have to exit and restart Word to display that location.

    1. The footnote continuation separator changes from the short line to the long line on it's own.
    2. Advanced/Navigation pane searching randomly checks through the main document and may search footnotes, or may search document only and not the footnotes.

Also, can new paragraph styles be based on character styles?

Thanks for any insight you can provide.

    -Karon

I haven't used "line" other than for quick testing, so I don't know if it might cause any issues. What specific problems have you noticed?

If you manually change all Spacing Before and After to points, does that fix the problems?
