Excel insert equation

I am trying to do a mail merge to create multiple math problem documents.  I see where Excel gives me all of the tools to create an equation, however the equation doesn't seem to go into a cell.  It sort of floats there on the sheet.

I don't understand how the creation of an equation is of any use if you can't put it into a cell.  I don't want the equation to have Excel perform any function, I just want it to be part of the text that I am merging into my document.

Can anyone help me with this?

Thanks for the response, but I am confused.  If I select a cell and start with ' , when I click on Insert, the Equation option is not there, only the Symbols option.

If I do the Ctrl + `, and click Insert Equation, the box is still floating.  I don't know how to get the floating box into a cell to use in a merge.

In case you want to insert equation through excel, then first you insert it like you were doing earlier. After doing it then press Ctrl + ` , it will change the result to the text showing equation.

Now in word document if you link this cell, then it will show equation/formula function.

What do you mean by equation?

I thought it to be a Formula function, where instead of result, you want to show the formula in your word document.

If that is not the case, then, I misunderstood your question.

I must be doing something wrong.  When you say, "insert it like you were doing earlier", what did you mean?  Create a floating equation?

I just created an equation (floating) and after entering the last term I did Ctrl +`.  Then I went into the floating cell and highlighted and copied the equation into a cell.  The equation lost its formatting when it was pasted into a cell.

There may be 2 ways of doing it.

    • You may enter your equation by prefix small inverted comma ( ' ), then the equation will be treated as a text only
    • Or with your equation in excel, you just press CTRL+ .  This small ( ) is in left side of 1 key and at the top of tab key. It will convert all equation results with equations. Now you can copy these cells and paste as a link in word document. There equations will be visible.

    Hope it helps.
