Word crashes multiple times. Fault Module Name: MSGR3EN.DLL

I am using Word 2013 (32-bit) on a Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit machine. The system is stable and fully updated (including the series of updates released on Tuesday, June 10) . My problem is that Word crashes multiple times a day and, so far, I haven’t found a clear pattern. The problem has been there since I first installed Office 2013. The other Office 2013 applications are not affected.

Some days Word works without a glitch for several hours, then, in the middle of editing a file, it will crash without any apparent reason. Sometimes, the same file will crash on opening multiple times (even 8 times in a row) until it will open and behave normally afterwards.

All these crashes have something in common, though. The application crash report invariably indicates the file <MSGR3EN.DLL> as the culprit.

A typical crash report looks like this:

Description

Faulting Application Path:              C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office15\WINWORD.EXE

Problem signature

Problem Event Name:                    APPCRASH

Application Name:                         WINWORD.EXE

Application Version:                      15.0.4623.1000

Application Timestamp:                 537283ac

Fault Module Name:                      MSGR3EN.DLL

Fault Module Version:                    15.0.4454.1000

Fault Module Timestamp:              509a3854

Exception Code:                             c0000005

Exception Offset:                            001cb1d6

OS Version:                                     6.3.9600.2.0.0.256.48

Locale ID:                                        2057

I looked on the Internet for users complaining about the same problem, but I haven’t found any. Could it be that I am the only one affected?

Any suggestion will be very appreciated.

    Hi Doug,

    After I got hold of a new installation media, I did:

    1. download and run the fix-it tool to uninstall Office;
    2. reboot my computer;
    3. install Office from the new media.

    The first thing I noticed was that the fix-it tool did not remove all traces of the previous installation. I tried it two times: clearly my normal.dot template and other customizations were still there.

    Therefore, I went on to remove Office 2013 following the manual procedure as described in the same kb article.

    After the manual removal, I did:

    1. install Office 2013 again;
    2. run windows update and let it install all updates;
    3. reboot the computer;
    4. run windows update again and let it install "Service Pack 1 for Microsoft office 2013 (KB2850036) 32-bit edition";
    5. reboot the computer.

    Unfortunately, the problem is still there. Nothing has changed.

    I wonder what's wrong: I had Office 2010 Pro installed on this very same machine (same OS: Windows 8.1) and it worked.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks Doug, this is something I haven't tried yet. Worth a try. Unfortunately, the office.com website does not accept my product key and I am unable to open an Office account. I am wondering what the problem is. The product is legit and activated without a glitch.

    I will get in touch with Microsoft support to solve this problem. When I will have access to a brand new installation media, I will carry out the steps you suggested. I will post here the results.

    Remove all traces of the Office installation by downloading the fixit from the following article:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2739501

    saving it to your computer and then running it.

    Then reinstall Office by logging into www.office.com/myaccountwith your registered email address and cick Install Office.

    yes, I did. I renamed MSGR3EN.DLL as OLD_MSGR3EN.DLL and repaired Office. I restarted Windows afterwards. The problem is still there, though.

    The faulting module is identified as the Microsoft English Natural Language Server. This suggests that it has something to do with the English proofing tools. Have you tried repairing Office?
