Entering "times" in Excel that can be added, subtracted and averaged...

I am trying to track race times and set up some formulas to find averages of certain races, internal splits of races and so on.  I am having a really tough time formatting the cells to accept these "times".  Can someone give me some help?  I will list a few examples below....

mm.ss.00 (I think this is the format I am looking for).....

One race was run in 1 minute 14 seconds and 20/100 of a second (1:14.20).  I am having trouble formatting that alone....

I would like to be able to but the times at each point of the race 22.24, 44.84, 1:07.80, and finally 1:14.20.  I would like to set some formulas to find the internal fractions of these times. 44.84 - 22.24 = 22.60 and so on.  I would also like to be able to average the final time (1:14.20) with the other final times of races at this distance, but cant do so until I can format these numbers.

Hopefully this makes sense...feel free to ask me additional questions if you are needing more info to help a brother out.

Thanks for your time!

Jonathon

    Select the cells.

Press Ctrl+1 to activate the Format Cells dialog.

If necessary, activate the Number tab.

Select Custom in the Category list.

Click in the Type box, delete its contents, and enter mm.ss.00 (or mm:ss.00 - whichever you prefer).

    Click OK.

To enter 22.24 seconds, you MUST enter it as 0:22.24, otherwise Excel will interpret the number differently than you intended.

You can enter 1:14.20 "as is", or even as 1:14.2 - the combination of : and . makes the entry unambiguous.
