"Include level number from" not working

Split from this thread.

Charles, Stefan et al,

I have implemented the Shauna Kelly (RIP!) headings numbering solution that Charles linked here, a few times thru the years. However, it doesn't seem to work for me right now, using Word 2007. When I go to set up my Heading 3 format (by clicking the 'Include level number from...' --> field, choosing

'Level 2'), it only brings in '1' (which is the format for Heading 1, not Heading 2!). Is this somehow a bug?

Thx!

Mark H.

If you are saying that you want 1, 1.1, 1.1.1 numbering or equivalent, note that at Level 2, you have to select Level 1 for "Include level number from," but at Level 3, you have to select both Level 1 and Level 2. Are you saying that the "Include level number from" dropdown is not showing Level 2?

Just in case you're trying to format numbering from the Modify Style dialog, be aware that this is no longer possible for multilevel (outline) numbering. You have to use the Define New Multilevel List dialog, and you should be able to set up all levels at once and link them to the appropriate styles. If you select one of the numbering styles that are already linked to the built-in heading styles, you save yourself a lot of work.

It would be easier if you could select more than one at a time. By the time you get down to Level 9 (if anybody did), you have to click eight times to include all the previous levels (assuming you didn't start with a numbering setup that had all the previous levels included.

Oh really?!  Shauna Kelly's directions don't say to choose both of the previous levels!  But now that I look at it again, I guess it's implied.  But YES!  That indeed works!  :-)

    Thanks so much!!  :-)

P.S. Now I don't see how to mark Suzanne's response as "the answer"!  (?)

To add to what Suzanne has said, you display the Multilevel List dialog box by clicking in the first level 1 paragraph of the list (which, for heading numbering, means the first Heading 1 paragraph of the document) and then clicking Home tab | Multilevel List | Define New Multilevel List.
